These terms cover Slowburn: Fanfiction Reader (“Slowburn”, “the app”), an iOS app published by the developer of this site (“we”, “us”). By installing or using Slowburn, you agree to them. If you don’t, please don’t use the app.
Slowburn is a reader — a client that fetches pages from archiveofourown.org with your device’s own internet connection and lays them out for reading on a phone or iPad. Think of it as a specialised browser, not a library.
Slowburn is free. There are no ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no features held back behind a paid tier.
Slowburn is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) or the Archive of Our Own.
“Archive of Our Own”, “AO3”, and the OTW’s names and logos are trademarks of the Organization for Transformative Works. They are used in this app and on this site only to describe, accurately and factually, what the app connects to. We claim no rights in them and make no attempt to pass Slowburn off as an official product.
If the OTW ever asks us to change how we refer to the Archive, we will.
Every work, comment, tag, and page you see in Slowburn comes from the Archive of Our Own and is transmitted directly to your device.
If you want a work removed, changed, or reported, you must go to the Archive. Writing to us cannot accomplish it.
Slowburn reaches the Archive as you, using your own connection and, if you sign in, your own AO3 session. Everything you do through the app — reading, searching, leaving kudos, bookmarking, posting a comment — is your activity on the Archive.
You agree to comply with the AO3 Terms of Service and Privacy Policy whenever you use Slowburn. Where those terms and these terms differ regarding your conduct on the Archive, AO3’s terms govern your relationship with the Archive, and we are not a party to it.
Please don’t use Slowburn to:
Signing in is optional; every feature that doesn’t require the Archive to know who you are works signed out.
If you do sign in, you type your password on AO3’s own login page, loaded in a web view. The app never sees or stores your password — only the session cookie the Archive returns. Keeping your AO3 credentials secure, and everything done under your AO3 account, is your responsibility. Signing out of Slowburn deletes that session from your device.
Slowburn is rated 17+ and is intended for adults. The Archive of Our Own hosts works across every rating, including explicit sexual content and works carrying graphic violence and other archive warnings, and Slowburn can display all of it.
Slowburn is not directed to children under 13, and we ask that they not use it. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Slowburn only with a parent or guardian’s consent and supervision.
The app includes optional content filters (by rating, archive warning, category, and excluded tags or keywords) that you can configure yourself. These filters work on the metadata the Archive supplies. They are a convenience, not a guarantee — a work that is mistagged, untagged, or tagged in a way we don’t recognise can get through.
Slowburn is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.
Concretely, and honestly:
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of Slowburn — whether or not we were advised such damages were possible.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for all claims relating to Slowburn is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the app, which is zero, and (b) USD 50.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations of warranties or liability. Where that is the case, the exclusions and limitations above apply to you only as far as that jurisdiction permits, and nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Slowburn is distributed through Apple’s App Store and runs on Apple’s operating systems, using Apple services (iCloud, notifications, speech synthesis) that you control through your own Apple account and device settings. Your use of those is governed by Apple’s terms, not ours. Apple is not a party to these terms and has no obligation to provide support for Slowburn. These terms are between you and us alone.
You can stop using Slowburn at any time by deleting the app. “Erase all data” in Settings clears the app’s data from this device and its copy in your iCloud first, if you want it gone before the app is.
We may stop distributing or supporting Slowburn, or discontinue it entirely, at any time. Because the app runs entirely on your device with no server behind it, a copy you have already installed will generally keep working until iOS or the Archive changes out from under it.
We may update these terms — for a new feature, a legal requirement, or to fix something unclear. When we do, we will change the effective date at the top of this page and publish the new version here. Material changes will also be surfaced in the app. Continuing to use Slowburn after a change means you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the developer resides, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of that jurisdiction will have jurisdiction over disputes arising from them — except where the law of your country of residence gives you the right to bring a claim locally, which these terms do not take away.
If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
